Gémenos! Our village at the foot of Sainte-Baume facing the Garlaban
Gémenos, a village close to our hearts, where the landscapes of Provence meet
Gémenos — or Gèmo in Provençal — is the name of our village. Between rolling hills and the Mediterranean, it is home to La Magdeleine, an 18th-century bastide now transformed into a boutique hotel by Michelin-starred chef Mathias Dandine, a true lover of this land.
To the north stands the Garlaban, that majestic rocky silhouette made famous by Marcel Pagnol, a faithful friend of La Magdeleine. He once wrote:
"It is not quite a mountain, but it is no longer a hill either: it is Garlaban."
Around here, we don’t say the Garlaban. We just say Garlaban — like speaking of an old friend. It watches over our daily lives, shapes our landscape, our culture, our cuisine. It’s a limestone land, vivid, always looking toward the sea.
To the south, the Calanques National Park stretches its white cliffs, turquoise waters and rugged trails from Marseille to Cassis. A true natural sanctuary, it mirrors the authenticity of our village.
To the east, the Sainte-Baume Regional Natural Park already borders Gémenos. This sacred forest, said to have sheltered Saint Mary Magdalene, is also a place for hiking, silence, and renewal.
A stay rooted in the Provençal soul
Perfectly located between Marseille, Aix-en-Provence and Cassis, La Magdeleine and Gémenos together offer a unique setting — peaceful, moving, and filled with wonder.
Here, the art of living takes root in light, in nature, and in shared memories.
